What Is an FLSP and How Can They Help You?

Christina De Palma • May 26, 2026

Family law matters can feel overwhelming.

Whether you are going through a separation, filing for divorce, dealing with child support issues, or trying to understand the court process, many people are unsure where to begin — and concerned about the cost of hiring a lawyer.

That is where an FLSP may be able to help.

What Does FLSP Mean?

FLSP stands for Family Legal Services Provider.

In Ontario, an FLSP is a licensed paralegal who has completed specialized training and received authorization from the Law Society of Ontario to provide certain family law services. The goal of the FLSP program is to improve access to justice by giving Ontarians more affordable legal support for specific family law matters.

Not every paralegal is an FLSP. To obtain this authorization, a paralegal must complete approved family law training and pass an examination administered by the Law Society of Ontario.

What Can an FLSP Do?

An FLSP can provide legal assistance and representation in certain family law matters that fall within their authorized scope.

This may include:

  • Joint and uncontested divorce applications
  • Family court process navigation
  • Motions to change child support in specific circumstances based on income information
  • Responding to support enforcement proceedings
  • Filing domestic contracts, including separation agreements
  • Change of name applications

For many people, these are important legal issues that still require professional guidance, but may not require the cost or complexity of full legal representation by a family lawyer.

Affordable and Practical Family Law Help

One of the biggest advantages of working with an FLSP is accessibility.

Family court procedures and paperwork can be confusing and stressful. Filing the wrong document, missing deadlines, or misunderstanding court requirements can lead to delays and frustration.

An FLSP can help by:

  • Explaining the legal process in plain language
  • Preparing and reviewing required documents
  • Helping ensure forms are properly completed and filed
  • Guiding clients through procedural steps
  • Providing representation where authorized and appropriate within their legal scope

This can make the process more manageable and provide clarity during what is often a difficult time.

What Can’t an FLSP Do?

It is equally important to understand that FLSPs work within a defined legal scope.

Some family law matters may require a family lawyer, particularly when cases involve:

  • Complex property division
  • Significant spousal support disputes
  • High-conflict parenting or decision-making disputes
  • Matters that extend beyond the FLSP authorization

A reputable FLSP will always explain the limits of their authority and refer clients to a lawyer when a matter falls outside their permitted services.
